How to Self Learn Korean

Updated: Sep 8, 2020

Korean is one of the most difficult languages to learn, but it has been growing in popularity ever since K-Pop became big. Due to this, many fans are eager to learn the language. In today’s post, I will show you how to learn Korean.

Korean is a difficult language to learn and requires note taking to stick things in your head. Unless you have an amazing memory (which I swear I don’t), buy a notebook and some pens (providing you don’t have them already) and you can start.

A website I find really helpful to learn Korean is How to Study Korean, which you can find here. It’s really useful and free, providing audio tracks to learn the alphabet and words. Starting with hangul, it goes all the way up to advanced grammar. When you are learning hangul, I suggest creating a Quizlet with every lesson, to stick these letters in your head.

Korean is easier if you have learnt another Asian language such as Chinese or Japanese. It might be easier than these. Korean has an alphabet while Chinese is made up of characters, one different for every word (not exactly). Japanese also has an alphabet but it is a lot more to remember. Personally, I find Japanese and Korean on the same level of difficultly and Chinese way higher in terms of difficulty, despite it being my mother tongue.

I also installed Duolingo to work on my Korean, but I primarily recommend How to Study Korean, as Duolingo teaches Korean wrongly. Duolingo is great for learning words, while How to Study Korean is much better for learning the alphabet. I suggest completing Unit 0 of How to Study Korean (you know what, I’m just gonna abbreviate it into HtSK) and then starting Duolingo for Korean, because it will make it much more easier to understand what the hell Duolingo Is throwing at you.

I’ll be honest here, I really don’t know how learning Korean would be like, because we all have different backgrounds, memorization skills and patience that affect our ability to learn certain languages.

I’ll finish it off here. Bye!
